Extension to Listed House

This rear extension was designed for a listed building in Rural Cambridgeshire. The existing house comprises of a 18th Century thatched cottage and a more recent side addition. The extension provides a new large ground floor bedroom area with en-suite bathroom and walk in wardrobes/storage.

Expertise in contemporary additions to historic buildings and the principles involved allowed for an informed dialogue with the listed building officer, securing permission for this characterful proposal.

The contemporary addition references the unique qualities of the historic timber framed construction of the 18thC cottage but re-interprets these in a modern way.  A large hanging bay window with bold solid oak framing brings daylight deep into the plan and incorporates a built-in window seat for reading. To make the most of the pitched roof form the interior is a vaulted ceiling with elegant exposed timber beams.
