House Refurbishment Hampstead

The main design move with this scheme was the creation of a double height rear extension by knocking through between the basement and ground floor levels of this substantial Victorian House in Hampstead, London in order to make the most of its location backing onto Hampstead Heath.

A large 5.8 metre high glazed shard forms the key feature of the rear elevation bringing light deep into the plan of the existing house and creating an exciting split-level, open plan living, kitchen and dining space. Further sliding doors also open up the space to the whole of the garden and expand the views out to the Heath.

A very personal project where many client meetings informed the overall approach and development of the design with an end result tailored carefully to their needs and incorporating many interesting interior features such as: a structural fully glazed internal bridge link and balconies spanning between the split level areas; beautiful bespoke Cherry wood wall paneling to main staircase; a sculptural copper clad fireplace and double height chimney breast, and a guest WC fully lined in back painted blue glass! This project was completed whilst working as a Senior Architect at Martin Evans Architects.
